Three police officials nabbed for R5m extortion attempt from Ekurhuleni MMC

A joint operation between the South African Police Service and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department on Wednesday saw the arrest of three police officials.

The three are accused of allegedly attempting to extort R5m from the City of Ekurhuleni human settlement MMC Lesiba Mpya.

The accused claimed they were in possession of a dossier containing evidence of alleged corruption and malfeasance committed by Mpya and executive mayor Mzwandile Masina.

To discuss these arrests, Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to Masina spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe.

It is quite frightening that people would be so brazen to try and extort the head of the city and some of his mayoral committee members. What we are pleased to be announcing is that the police did a collaborative effort in finding out who those are and ultimately nabbing them.

Phakamile Mbengashe, Spokesperson - Executive mayor of Ekurhuleni Mzwandile Masina

He says the alleged dossier is a false story as the first reaction to any form of corruption is to go to the police and lay a charge of corruption.

This is quite a protracted story. In March there was a string of messages that went viral in the city about accusations against the mayor and some senior officials, we released a statement and clarified prescripts of the law about corruption and the implications of not reporting it.
