'The SABC delivered overwhelmingly fair election coverage'

Media Monitoring Africa has released its report on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) coverage of the national elections.

Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala Show speaks to the organisation's director, William Bird, on the report's findings.

We monitored the SABC as well as other media houses over the election period and we looked at how they reported on the elections. What was surprising and pleasing about the SABC was that they covered the elections in a fair amount, as did the majority of other media.

William Bird, Director - Media Monitoring Africa

He adds that the report is significant because Media Monitoring Africa found evidence of clear systemic bias in the SABC's reporting in the 2016 local elections.

In other words, it was clear in 2016 that there were efforts to deliberately favour and disfavour certain political parties, seeking to undermine democracy. But this time the SABC moved towards having an overwhelmingly fair coverage.
