'Watching the whale choke and die on the ropes was horrific'

A Brydes Whale died after being caught in an octopus trap in Cape Town's False Bay.

Environment editor at NDTV Swati Thiyagarajan talks to John Maytham about how False Bay holds threats for certain species of sea life

She explains that she was on the City of Cape town's de-entanglement team boat.

It went out to cut the whale loose. I was on the boat and it was such a horrific sight that I felt I had to write about it.

Much of the ravages of the ocean remain unseen, she says, so witnessing this was a very visible tragedy.

The licence was awarded some 15 years ago to catch octopus, she says, but the effects have proved detrimental to other sea life.
