Corruption Watch has recorded just over 1 400 claims of corruption against the police between 2012 and 2018.

Corruption Watch’s new report, Corruption in Uniform has revealed concerning levels of alleged corruption in policing in South Africa.

The organisation says since its inception in 2012, just over 1 400 members of the public shared their experiences of corruption at the hands of the police.

It says the leading categories of corruption from these reports are bribery (33% of total), abuse of power (23% of total), and dereliction of duty (18%).

According to the organisation, the most implicated police officials are detectives and investigating officers, who are frequently aided by other colleagues.

Researcher at Corruption Watch Melusi Ncala joined Gushwell Brooks on the Karima Brown Show to share more details on the report.

This was not necessarily to ascertain whether people are having good or bad experiences, it was simply a sample based on people that have come to us and said we are having a bad experience.

Ncala mentions one case of an abuse of power.

In one of the cases a woman wanted to open a case and the officer was unwilling, she was being abused and he insisted on strip searching her so that he can make sure indeed that she has got scars, it became an issue of him trying to solicit sexual favours and he went as far as saying he is in authority and will do as he pleases.

There are those issues where people have alleged that police have followed them to their homes and tried to extrot money from them.
