A total of ten patients were assisted at the Netcare emergency departments for elephant attacks in the last four years.

This is according to the Medibank data for patients attended to at the 45 emergency departments at Netcare hospitals around the country following attacks and bites by wild animals.

Netcare's national quality and systems manager for trauma and emergency Rene Grobler says elephants are so used to be poached in other parts of the continent that when they see any form of human they see danger.

Rene Grobler, National quality and systems manager - Netcare

Grobler says all ten patients were critically injured with a lot of crush injuries. Out of the ten, there was also one fatality.
