Amcu demands R17,000 minimum wage for mineworkers

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) is demanding R17,000 salary per miner in the platinum sector.

Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa says the union has adjusted its base demand from R12,500 to R17 000 because of inflation.

Talks have resumed with the country's biggest producers.

EWN reporter Theto Mahlakoana says the requested amount could get to R30,000 a month considering various allowances workers are entitled to.

Mathunjwa says they have done a feasibility study on the price of living that has impact on workers, saying that these demands are well within reason given the kind of amounts that are paid to CEOs in that industry.

If this is realised, it could be great for the workers because mining is a lot of work.

But it still remains to be seen whether this can take off as a legitimate demand or Mathunjwa will have to back down and go back to about 60,000 Amcu members to do a review of the proposal made.
