City of Joburg offers debt relief for struggling residents

The City of Johannesburg has announced that struggling residents may be relieved of half of their debt if they meet certain criteria.

Finance MMC at the city, Funzela Ngobeni shares the categories in which you would have to fall.

Part of the criteria includes customers who have been in arrears for more than 90 days, have a household gross income of between R4,700 and R22,000 per month.

He says the market value of your property must not exceed R600,000.

Over and above people will have to bring their proof of payment, their bank statements as well so that they can be scrutinised and they are able to sign an agreement with the city.

We do understand that this may not cover all customers but we have to start somewhere.

In the month of August we will be going on a roadshow across the city, engaging with rsidnets and making them aware of what is required for them to participate in this programme. From the beginning of September we will start taking applications.

Asked whether the city can afford it, Ngobeni says economic challenges currently faced in the country have forced municipalities into a corner.

He says this will allow the city to get more customers onto the database.

Some of these customers are those that you find maybe we can't find or trace, now they will come forward and start paying. That will assist us in terms of liquidity and revenue we desperately need as a city.

Funzela Ngobeni, Finance MMC - City of Johannesburg

We will be able to bring them back into the system but most importantly they will start paying again on a monthly basis.
