Four-point plan developed to combat school violence in Gauteng

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says a four-point plan has been developed to combat school violence in the province.

The plan includes identifying pupils who have the potential to harm others - such as bullies - so that they can get professional help.

He says another aspect would be to strengthen disciplinary processes in schools.

If there is somebody who has done something wrong, the disciplinary committee must sit immediately because if you do not do that people will do as they wish because they think discipline takes time. So we are raising our SGBs on how to develop a charge sheet, how to ensure we have a watertight case and present it in a manner that can give you a successful prosecution.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

We really believe that each and every police station must understand all the schools and give us a contact person because in most instances when people witness violence and call the police station - they will complain that they do not have a car or they do not know who should deal with this matter.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

There is a concrete plan with police and they are giving us their support.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

Lesufi says the last part is to develop am emergency response system.

We are working with telecommunications companies to develop a system. It is one of the proposals we have put on the table, we strongly believe it will assist us.
