Nomzamo Mlengana first black SA woman to head to Juilliard School of Arts

Johannesburg-based Nomzamo Mlengana has become the first black South African girl to gain admission to the prestigious Juilliard School of Arts and the first African to be admitted to study drama.

She had just turned 14 when she asked for a formal meeting with her parents and prepared a powerpoint presentation about her career goals and went on to be accepted into Walnut Hill School for the Arts in America.

Joanne Joseph sat down with Mlengana to find out more about how her journey began.

The audition for Wallnut Hill was difficult cause I did not know what a monologue was. I just googled and the first one that came up I memorised it and prepared for it.

Nomzamo Mlengana, acting student

I have always wanted to act since I was very young. I grew up with a 'kids are supposed to be seen and not heard from' but whenever I was doing drama, my views and my perspective was something that was valued for the first time.

Nomzamo Mlengana, acting student

It has helped me realise other avenues withing myself that I can't really express everyday.
