Whilst I wine and dine here ..wondering how the world of shivering land thieves is doing #OurLand— Zindzi Mandela (@ZindziMandela) June 14, 2019
South Africa's ambassador to Denmark, Zindzi Mandela, has sparked a Twitter debate on the land issue with the above tweet.
Following her remarks, lobby groups and some politicians have called for her to be recalled from her diplomatic posting.
Social media users engaged on the topic with many defending Mandela, saying an honest and open discussion needs to be had on the land.
I listened to a talk by an American who said people in a country will always fight over their collective political memory. Americans are still debating the cause of the Civil War that ended in 1865. It's normal for us in SA to be debating our past...— Dr. Sithembile Mbete (@sthembete) June 18, 2019
Eusebius says Zindzi Mandela can tweet her own truth.
If she wants to talk her truth or tweet her truth, even as an ambassador for me that is perfectly legit.— Eusebius McKaiser, Show host
The transition only began 29 years ago and formal apartheid only ended in 1994. We're still going to have many years of debate about what happened, what it meant, who won and who lost. This is the messiness of building a nation. It needs to happen for us to progress.— Dr. Sithembile Mbete (@sthembete) June 18, 2019
I wonder how many people who are responding to Zindzi are conveniently smoothing over the complexity in Sithembile's tweet by saying: 'Oh it's just unambassadorial.'— Eusebius McKaiser, Show host
If Zindzi Mandela was not an ambassador, I wonder whether you would engage the contents of those tweets differently.— Eusebius McKaiser, Show host
I suspect some people who criticise her would engage her differently but I also suspect, knowing the country I live in and you live in, that some people would be equally touched on their studios even if this was not an ambassador.— Eusebius McKaiser, Show host
Helen Zille = Colonialism was good.— Tumelo Mapaa (@DjNewSouthAfric) June 16, 2019
Whites = It's the truth.
Zindzi Mandela = colonialism was bad.
Blacks = Apologize. That was an irresponsible statement. You are an ambassador.#HandsOffZindziMandela
If @ZindziMandela could address us in the 80’s on behalf of her father at the height of Apartheid, what will be difficult in 2019 for her to air her views on the land question which by the way we have resolve on as ANC. Land belongs to us nothing more can be closer to the truth— Mzwandile Masina (@mzwandileMasina) June 16, 2019
Land return does not need the consent of whites - the fact that black South Africans allow us to even discuss this issue is a sign of their humanity not ours.— Kim Heller (@kimheller3) June 15, 2019
As whites we have shown NO remorse for land theft - Perhaps we have no moral compass #ZindziMandela speaks TRUTHS
