Are you guilty of overusing punctuation marks in your social media interactions?

Linguistics expert Dr Ruth Page explains why so many of us can't seem to keep our fingers off the common exclamation mark since the advent of platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp.

People try and compensate for the fact that when we write messages to each other we don't always have tone of voice to convey some of the more subtle meanings above the actual meaning of the words.

So traditionally, when is the right time to use an exclamation mark?

You should use it at the end of a sentence to show that you are giving emphasis or that you are making an exclamation in some way.
