[LISTEN] What does legislation say about driving with a disability?

Driving Ambitions is one project that has provided an opportunity for people with physical disabilities to drive.

With the objective of getting a driving licence, the project has not only given learners mobility but has also helped them find employment.

Occupational therapist and disability driving consultant Caroline Rule, who has had a major role to play in the project, spoke to Azania Mosaka about legislation around driving with a disability.

It basically boils down to one paragraph in the Road Traffic Act. They have got a few medical conditions - so it talks about how you may not drive if you have uncontrolled epilepsy, uncontrolled diabetes, disabling spells of dizziness or blackouts... and then muscular incoordination, there is a section on mental health.

The one paragraph we normally refer to is if you have had an accident or illness which affects your ability to adequately control a vehicle, you have to hand in your license and be retested. Which is very vague.

If you tick any of those boxes you are meant to provide a medical letter stating that you are fit to drive. So with our clients with physical disabilities, yes their ability to control has been affected. However, with the correct adaptations they are then able to drive - that is the letter they need to take with them.
