'HR people do not make hiring decisions, it is line managers'

Government has announced that from April 1 2019, work experience will no longer be a requirement for recruitment for entry-level jobs in the public sector.

This move by the government is to remove a barrier for entry into the workplace for unemployed youth and in particular young graduates.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has invited the private sector to follow the move by the government and give young people a chance to gain work experience.

Eusebius McKaiser speaks to human capital development executive Edith Leeuta about the importance of having work experience.

I believe all jobs are important. Part of the problem is that the organisations have not clearly defined what an entry-level job is and what the key competencies are.

Edith Leeuta, Human capital development executive

If organisations heed to President Ramaphosa's call to do away with experience, are they going to change their recruitment systems? Are they going to employ new systems of recruitment? Are they going to make programmes available internally that are going to make sure that when young people come in they are not overwhelmed?

HR people do not make hiring decisions. It is the line managers, and they want people who will hit the ground running. They simply do not have the time; in some instances, they can't even impart knowledge.
