Nominees for parliamentary committee chairpersons announced

The African National Congress (ANC) has finally announced the names of members it wants to be committee chairs in Parliament.

READ: Still no indication who will chair ANC's oversight committees

Eyewitness News parliamentary correspondent Gaye Davis says the list includes Bongani Bongo, who was accused of attempting to bribe the evidence leader in Parliament’s inquiry into state capture at Eskom.

He has been nominated for the home affairs committee. Others include Mosebenzi Zwane, who is up for the transport committee.

He [Zwane] was the subject of another inquiry in parliament by the mineral resources committee that never got really got anywhere, into the role he played related to state capture.

Former North West premier Supra Mahumapelo is up for the tourism committee and Faith Muthambi for the co-operative governance and traditional affairs committee.

Sfiso Buthelezi is nominated for the standing committee on appropriations.

Asked about the calibre of those nominated, ANC Chief Whip Pemmy Majodina is reported to have said people appeared before the party’s integrity commission and were cleared.

She essentially is saying that until proven guilty by a court if law, these members are deemed to be innocent.

Reacting to list of nominees, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) parliamentary co-ordinator Matthew Parks says they are happy with some of the names, including Yunus Carrim, who Parks says has worked very hard to deal with corruption in the past.

He says the organisation is, however, disappointed with how the process was handled.

There hasn't been any alliance consultation until the last minute.

We had been pushing for engagement over the past several weeks. It took an intervention by our most senior leadership last week to force the ANC to engage alliance partners.
