[LISTEN] Business needs to open doors to TVET students, says Blade Nzimande

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Blade Nzimande says he would like business to play its part by opening up their workplaces for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) college students to get work experience.

Nzimande was speaking to Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive team ahead of the State of the Nation Address (Sona).

Nzimande admits TVET students are still getting the raw deal compared to their university peers.

If we give those students work place, it improves their chances of being employed or starting their own businesses. That is what will end up attracting more young people toward TVET colleges. Those who access universities are a very small percentage of young people.

Blade Nzimande, Minister - Higher Education, Science and Technology

In the colleges we have got college councils and we invite business to even sit in curriculum committees to say what kind of skills do we want as business so that colleges are able to respond better to that...come in and participate.
