'Mmusi Maimane can't rubbish Constitution he claims to defend when it suits him'

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has proposed to Parliament that basic education be de-unionised.

Responding to the State of the Nation Address by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Maimane says basic education must be modernised.

Joanne Joseph speaks to National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa executive director Basil Manuel on this proposal.

I want to weigh in on the view that If you de-unionise education, you will solve all the problems.

My problem with Mr Maimane is that he forgets we are in a constitutional democracy and the unions as part of their role have to defend their members.

You can't claim to be a defender of the Constitution on the one hand, and when it suits you, you want to rubbish the same Constitution.
