Cape Town murder rate skyrockets

Cape Town's murder rate has sky-rocketed to 2,302 in the last six months.

City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says from those numbers 900 of the murders are gang-related.

In recent months, embattled communities have seen a surge in these gang-related activities, often getting caught in the crossfire and living in constant fear.

Speaking to Clement Manyathela, Smith says the last time he saw these kinds of figures was five years ago.

The last stats I saw that were nearly this high was four to five years ago.
