City of Tshwane disputes claims that AfriForum has halted planned tariff hike

The City of Tshwane says claims that the planned tariff increase has been halted are untrue and that it has simply been asked to explain the process and how it plans to make revenue.

There are reports that AfriForum has managed to halt the planned tariff increase of 13.8% after requesting that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) not approve the proposed hike for the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality which was meant to take effect from Monday.

AfriForum argued the metro had found a devious way to get consumers to pay much more than the allowed increase for municipalities.

Tshwane MMC for utility services Abel Tau says there is nothing untoward about the proposed hike.

The City of Tshwane has not done anything untoward expect that we have as usual submitted our tariff increases which are in line with the final draft as published by Nersa.

It has not been blocked.

Council is the executive authority in the city, Nersa cannot block council from doing that, that is why we brought a report to council with these tariffs. The tariffs that have been approved by council will be implemented.
