'When patients ask about the cost, the answer is always whatever you can afford'

Can you imagine going to the doctor and paying what you can afford?

Meet, Dr Paulo de Valdoleiros, a medical practitioner who allows patients to pay what they afford for consultation.

The good doctor speaks to Kieno Kammies on why he does this at his practice.

We started the practice three weeks ago, it is our fourth week. It is very simple really, the patient comes in, fill in an application, I then see the patient, examine them if it is appropriate and give them basic medication. And when all is said and done, they go to reception and there they decide. My staff is well trained, their answer to any question about how much it is, the answer is always whatever you can afford.

Paulo de Valdoleiros, Doctor

He adds that he wanted to be a doctor because he wanted to help people.

And when probed as to how he makes a living considering that he charges people whatever they can afford, De Valdoleiros had this to say:

I adjust my life to my income instead of adjusting your income to your life. Asking me how I make a living, pre-supposes that there must be a certain minimum for me to make a living and that minimum depends on how complex your life has become in terms of everything else.
