Process for electing Parliament's chairpersons suffers some delays

The appointment of chairpersons to certain key parliamentary committee positions suffered some delays on Tuesday after the Democratic Alliance objected to some of the nominees.

The party resisted the appointment of at least nine African National Congress’ (ANC) members including Bongani Bongo.

Eyewitness News reporter Babalo Ndenze has more on process.

It is usually quite a quick straightforward process which just requires a nomination and someone to second that nomination but this time the opposition and the DA in particular has listed nine members of the ANC and objected to these nominations and did so by putting forward their own candidates in a number of these committees.

I attended the home affairs committee this morning that ratified Bongani Bongo as chairperson, that was delayed by 30 minutes.
