Sassa makes headway in fraud probe, suspends accounts

The agency has asked innocent beneficiaries who may be affected by to make an affidavit at a police station.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says it has had to suspend 2,800 accounts due to suspicious activity.

The agency says it has identified potential fraud on accounts from various banks as well as the South African Post Office (Sapo), with most cases coming from the Eastern Cape.

It has asked innocent beneficiaries who may be affected to make an affidavit at a police station confirming the account holders bank details and that the current account details on the Sassa database.

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi has assured the public that progress has been made in identifying the culprits.

We have a very tight case. We actually have information against the individuals engaged in this particular activity, however, I need to be cautious because the matter is at a very sensitive stage.

The report is going to be compiled and given to the police so they are able to do their job.

We want to appeal to our beneficiaries because we know it is a very painful exercise to come to our offices with an ID and affidavit but we think it is in their best interest.
