'We need to deal with the sources of pollution decisively,' says groundWork

Non-profit environmental justice service and developmental organisation groundWork is suing the South African government for failing to crack down on some of the world's worst air pollution that is being emitted by power plants operated by the likes of Eskom, as well as refineries operated by Sasol.

Community campaigner Thomas Mnguni says groundWork has brought the case before the High Court to declare that the high levels of pollution which affect people's health is in breach of Section 24 of the Constitution.

He says the organisation wants a specific plan to deal with air pollution in affected areas.

We know the sources of this pollution and we need to deal with them in a decisive manner.

It's of no use for them to monitor the levels of pollution yet fail to hold people accountable.

Eskom alone has more than 3,200 exceedances in a period of about 21 months, in that period what is it that government did to make sure that Eskom is compliant?
