Correctional services in for a shake-up following Westville incidents

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola says there will be immediate interventions following the suspension of a senior manager for corporate affairs in the Durban management area.

The suspension comes after two separate incidents were recorded at Westville prison.

A video has captured wardens encouraging inmates to fight. In another video, inmates could be seen sniffing a white substance.

Lamola held a briefing on Wednesday.

Eyewitness News reporter Babalo Ndenze was there.

The minister is saying they are still engaging organised labour and the NPA on a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to smuggling of contraband, etc.

Errand officials like the ones agitating the prisoners to fight, they will not be spared any mercy he says, and these officially will be dismissed.

The minister is targeting inmates, officials in prison, as well as members of the public who may have something to do with these breaches.

Ndenze says some of the interventions include the introduction of body scanners.

The director general Arthur Fraser says they have had the body scanners for quite sometime but they are sitting there doing nothing now they are going to make them functional.
