Katlehong primary school set alight as residents protest over electricity

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has slammed Katlehong residents after the township primary school was burnt down this week.

Lesufi says residents are protesting over a lack of electricity.

In a tweet on Thursday, the MEC wrote that this was completely unacceptable and suggested that the department will not be repairing the school.

Responding to criticism over his tweet on the Afternoon Drive, Lesufi says the department must send a strong message.

You can't take money from other communities that are waiting for a school

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

We need to send a strong message, we need to draw a line. There is no way that we can continue to repair things that you claim that you need them.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

It is not the first time we are doing this, we are being consistent... people who did this are selfish. These are children of the community.

He says pupils will be moved to another venue.
