Conveyancing sector is not transformed, says the Law Society of South Africa

The Law Society of South Africa is concerned about the high failure rate of students writing acceptance exams in the conveyancing sector.

Only 281 students passed the acceptance exam for the conveyancing sector out of a total of 1,221 students.

The low pass rate is blamed on the control of access to advanced levels of studies in a field believed to be dominated by white males as well as papers being written in English and Afrikaans.

Nickolaus Bauer speaks to South African Law Society president Mvuso Notyesi on the matter.

Over the years, it has been very complicated to get access into the legal profession but now every offer is being made to access the sector with ease.

Mvuso Notyesi, President - South African Law Society

Notyesi says there is no transformation in the conveyancing sector.

In the conveyancing sector, you have very few women; you have a few black people. It is one of the areas that remain untransformed.

Mvuso Notyesi, President - South African Law Society

Those that are qualified into conveyancing will not get work with the commercial banks. They take that work and give those who are developed. There are a lot of anti-transformation efforts.
