Understanding the difference between self-care and self-indulgence

Clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyane says we need to be able to do 'for' ourselves, before we can do for others.

Self-care - is it just a buzzword in our busy 21st century lives, or is it critical for our well-being?

Refiloe Mpakanyane explores the concept with clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyane, who says it brings up the question of defining who you are.

Women especially, tend to put themselves second in terms of the primary role they may see themselves playing as a partner or parent.

Jiyane says the question here is whether you see that role as influencing you, or actually determining who you are.

The answer to the 'who' or 'what' I'm taking care of will be based on how you answer the question of 'Who am I?'.

It's about the regard I hold for myself, as myself, before I am a self for other people - I am my first and most important customer in life.

It's simple, but not an easy road to walk especially if you have people whose lives are so dependent on you.

But how do we distinguish between between self-care and self-indulgence?

Jiyane says it's about learning the difference between being selfish and being self-serving.

What is the intention behind what I'm doing, what's the driving force - is it a '_for _self' as opposed to an 'against another'.

It is being able to do what you need to do with and for yourself, so that you are then able to do with and for others.
