'I would describe the Lesotho MOU as cosmetic diplomacy'

President Cyril Ramaphosa has witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding that will pave the way for establishing the Lesotho reforms authority on Thursday.

However, in-fighting within Prime Minister Tom Thabane’s ABC Party threatens to weaken political stability.

Can the political crisis be averted even with the internal political battles?

To discuss what is happening in the Mountain Kingdom, Bongani Bingwa chats to Eye Witness News reporter Nthakoana Ngatane.

I would describe this memorandum of understanding as cosmetic diplomacy because Ramaphosa came to Lesotho and met with a prime minister who is facing a motion of no confidence in the country. This agreement said nothing about whether or not when the parliament opens on 5 August it will prevent the motion of no confidence from not happening.

Nthakoana Ngatane, Reporter - EWN

She adds that at the heart of what is happening in Lesotho is a constitution that has loopholes and has given a great deal of power to the prime minister.

We saw in 2012 when Thabane formed the first coalition between three parties and then lost support. When Parliament asked him to step down, he called for fresh elections.
