Cape to Cairo plane trip

A plane built by a group of local teenagers has completed a 12,000km trip from Cape Town to Cairo over three weeks.

A 17-year-old pilot from Krugersdorp has spoken of her delight at landing in Cairo three weeks after taking off from Cape Town in a plane built by a group of local teens.

Megan Werner headed up the project under her foundation U Dream Global, bringing together a group of teenagers from a range of different backgrounds to build the four-seater Sling 4 aircraft.

Over the past three weeks, the crew has made stops in Namibia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zanzibar, Tanzania and Uganda, clocking up a total of 12,000km.

But despite the enormous achievement, Werner admits the adventure wasn't without its challenges.

We couldn't get clearances for Cairo so we were stuck in Zanzibar for eight days. In Addis we struggled to find fuel, so we were stranded again, and then our support plane broke down and we had to continue the trip - two teenagers alone.

And Megan says it's certainly been a life-changing experience.

My co-pilot and I were saying we've transformed so much from the people we were at the beginning and the people we are now are totally different.
