'He played with the heart of a lion' - Francois Pienaar remembers James Small

Tributes were pouring in for Springboks rugby legend James Small on Wednesday.

The 50-year-old sports star died at a hospital in Johannesburg; it's believed he suffered a heart attack.

Among those paying tribute to the winger is former Springbok captain Francois Pienaar, who led Small and the rest of the Springboks to victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

The class of 1995, we're heartbroken... it was a great shock.

According to former teammate Chester Williams, who saw Small recently, he was working hard on getting fit again.

About a month ago we were at a function together and he told me he's busy with training.

Williams remembers playing against Small in 1994 in the Lions' Cup.

He was a difficult character to play against and that's why he's a legend today.
