Wits students have shutdown the university in response to the announcement made by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande that universities may increase fees up to 8% in 2017.
Nzimande also said government will support students in family households that earn less than R600 000 a year.
EWN reporter, Ziyanda Ngcobo, says students are currently at the university gates, blocking access to anyone coming in and out.
Students say they want the university to allow them to gather at Solomon Mahlanga House, but the university has denied them access to do so.
If we are being denied access to Solomon Mahlangu House no one must exit the university. Wits must not police our spaces! #FeesMustFall— #WitsOweek17 (@WitsSRC) September 19, 2016
