Who owns student's intellectual property?

If you work on an idea while at university, either as a student or as a researcher, and the idea proves to be commercially viable, who is entitled to reap the rewards?

On Wednesday, UCT graduate Craig Flanagan, told the breakfast show about his role in a urine-collection system which won him an award from Greenovate. This concept has now been adapted for use in a R600 million building owned by Growthpoint properties. But he says he was never contacted by Growthpoint and only heard that his idea was being implemented via media reports

Kieno tackles the issue of students coming up with a commercially viable idea and what rights they have to their intellectual property.

He speaks to Piet Barnard, the director of the Research Contracts and Innovation Department at UCT; Pieter Visagie, partner in the patent department at Adams and Adams and Dr Dyllon Randall from UCT's Civil Engineering Dept.
