'Relief' for the Zumas as Duduzane found not guilty of culpable homicide

A Randburg court hearing the culpable homicide case of Duduzane Zuma has ruled that the state failed to prove he caused Phumzile Dube's death in February 2014.

Dube died when Zuma's Porsche 911 crashed into a taxi in which she was travelling - he had always maintained his innocence in the case.

EWN reporter Theto Mahlakoana was in court on Friday for the verdict of Magistrate Tebogo Thupaatlase.

(He said that) the evidence had been consistent with the defence's argument that Duduzane was not speeding on the night of the crash and that it was, in fact, the conditions that evening, it was raining.

Despite the verdict coming down in favor of Zuma, Phindi Mjonondwane of the National Prosecuting Authority says it respects the court's decision.

Justice was served. At the end of the day, justice is about uncovering the truth and it also should be applied equally and fairly without prejudice.

Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA spokesperson

She adds that the NPA will not be pursuing an appeal.
