Nzimande: Treasury doesn't have the money for free education

Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, has insisted that Treasury doesn't have the funds to cover a no-fee increase at South Africa's universities.

This comes after he announced that NSFAS-qualifying students (students from households earning less than R600 000 annual household income) wouldn't pay for university fee increases, which has been left at each university's discretion and capped at 8%.

702/Cape Talk's Eusebius Mckaiser (standing in for Redi Tlhabi) spoke to the Minister on what Cabinet's position is on the matter.

He said the Cabinet has always supported the cause for affordable education, which has paved the way for the most recent increment adjustments.

In October 2015, #FeesMustfall students protesters marched to the Union Buildings to demand a 0% increase and free education for all. A 0% increase was announced shortly after the march.

Listen to the interview below:

All that I know is that there is no money waiting for financing at 0% or no-fee increase for categories of people. He's [Pravin Gordhan] the one with the authority.

Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education and Training

The Minister of Finance has been very supportive otherwise we wouldn't have reached the agreement, which I regard as a milestone.
