What is your relationship between you and your psychologist or psychiatrist?

Eusebius McKaiser speaks to clinical psychologist Cassandra Govender about the power dynamics between the patient and the practitioner.

Govender says going to see a psychologist is not a social relationship.

When you walk into the doctor's office, I hope people are less assuming that the power lies with the practitioner and more thinking of collaboration. We need to understand that each of us brings different resources to the encounter.

The idea where you come into the office and look at your practitioner and think 'Oh they are going to fix all my problems' is a narrative I want to get away from because that is not how the process works.
