There will be no SABC job cuts, says Bemawu

The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu)) says the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is not planning to retrench 33% of its staff.

Bemawu president Hannes du Buisson says the union had contacted the SABC following reports by the Sunday Times that there will be job cuts at the national broadcaster.

The paper also claimed that the SABC was hoping to save R279m a year and close down five regional offices.

We were equally shocked when we heard on Sunday morning that the SABC have this plan of retrenching a third of its staff.

Hannes Du Buisson, President - Broadcasting, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union

We made contact with the executive management of the SABC where we inquired and they sent us the press release where they denied the report of staff retrenchment the SABC.
