Former minister Penuell Maduna denies seeking cash for Zuma's exit from politics

Former justice minister and anti-apartheid activist Penuell Maduna has denied claims that he and Bulelani Ngcuka asked businessman Mzi Khumalo for money to entice the former president Jacob Zuma to retire from politics.

Zuma made the allegations during his testimony before the state capture commission on Monday and painted a picture of what he claims was a long-running conspiracy to have him removed.

Maduna says he left public service at the end of former president Thabo Mbeki's first term and if he would have asked Khumalo for anything, it would be to help him to set up a business.

If I had to ask Mzi, who was and still is a close friend of mine, for anything, I would have actually asked him to help me establish myself in business. Having left public office I had no interest in any of these things that were happening at all.

You must remember Bulelani had also left public office almost immediately after my departure. We were hustling around business.

Penuell Maduna, Former justice minister

I can confirm that no such discussion ever took place at all.
