Thandi Modise demands that ministers be hands-on

National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise is cracking the whip on what she terms "hands-off, ears-off" ministers when it comes to answering to Parliament for their departments' finances.

Speaking during her budget vote, Modise says some ministers over the years had tended to leave it to officials to attend parliamentary committee meetings.

Eyewitness News reporter Gaye Davis says Modise indicated that she will give the attendance register to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

National Speaker Thandi Modise was very clear [ministers] not to be what she says 'hands-off and ears-off' politicians when it comes to answering Parliament for their departments' finances.

She is demonstrating a very firm non-partisan approach in warning the members of the executive to be more hands-on and to come and attend parliamentary sittings.

She says there will be regular reports to the president about attendance and she is making it clear she is prepared to act against everybody in Parliament when necessarily when they are not meeting their duties.
