Grief has taught me so much about myself - Letshego Zulu

Letshego Zulu says she is a firm believer that life continues and while it is painful when someone dies, the clock keeps ticking. She adds that it is your choice to allow grief to either "freeze you or free you".

Her husband Gugu Zulu died in 2016 when the two set to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro along with the team of the Trek4Mandela initiative.

She has now released her book I Choose to Live: Life after Losing Gugu, a memoir reflecting on her love story with her husband as well as how she has made sense of her loss.

Zulu sat down with Azania Mosaka to shed more light on her journey.

You do channel certain things in dealing with grief. It is also a mindset in a way because you need to channel it in the direction that you want to go as a person. If it is not channelled, you end up staying in this dark hole.

Letshego Zulu, Author

I was one of those people who was very active in my channelling because I am a firm believer that life continues. We all come into this world individually and we will all depart individually.

Letshego Zulu, Author

One thing that Gugu often used to tell me is don't be afraid of being selfish with yourself.

Letshego Zulu, Author

She speaks of the amazing support she received from her maternal family and Gugu's family.

They literally cradled my broken heart.

Grief has taught me so much about myself. It has taught me to be grateful for life, it has taught me that you should be in tune with everyone around you and the things you involve yourself in.
