Stellenbosch students find salvation from stress in the soil

Gardening has long been proven to be one of the best ways to improve many aspects of well-being.

From improving one's mood, reducing stress and boosting physical health.

A gardening club introduced at Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is proving to be a huge success - and stress reliever -among students.

It was founded last year by the Dean's Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability in a bid to introduce more green spaces at the university's Tygerberg Campus.

Psychologist Charl Davids says students are often under enormous pressure, and the club help provide an outlet for that.

There's a lot of evidence that stress sits in the body.

Planting vegetables helps with the stress, but also to be in nature and working with the soil helps the students mental health.
