Consulting Engineers SA has confirmed that South Africa is seeing a decline in the number of engineers in the country as a large number of them are opting for jobs abroad.
Consulting Engineers SA CEO Christopher Campbell says this is worrying because engineering has been identified among the 10 scarcest skills in the country.
He says there is a multiplicity of reasons why engineering professionals are leaving.
There are systemic factors which don't help encourage people to want to embark on engineering as a profession and remain in that profession.— Christopher Campbell, CEO - Consulting Engineers SA
He says the value attributed to the service provided by professional engineers in both the public and private sector is being commoditsed to the point where clients ask for discounts.
We seem to, in the public sector, insist on appointing professional engineers at the lowest cost and we do not equate that to the quality I am going to get out of that.— Christopher Campbell, CEO - Consulting Engineers SA
