Can Frans Matlala save our SABC?
Last week Frans Matlala was introduced as the new CEO of South Africa's public broadcaster. Speaking on 702 and Cape Talk public broadcasting activist, Kate Skinner outlined what tasks the new CEO has to deal with to "fix" the SABC.
What you want from this new CEO is first of all to chart a vision - a very strong one, and it's about articulating what is public broadcasting. How is public broadcasting say different from commercial broadcasting? What I was a bit worried about was hearing media reports of him saying 'yes we're going to broadcast the truth but we want to balance that'. How do you balance the truth? The first thing is to say that this is the kind of broadcasting that we want - a lot more voices ... all of those multiple voices in South Africa.Kate Skinner, SOS: Support Public Broadcasting Coalition
Speaking to Weekend Breakfast co-presenter, Azania Mosaka, Skinner also expressed concerns about the public broadcaster's finances, and the massively disproportionate salary bill despite revenues being down by approximately R20 million.
The second thing I think that we've got to look at is the finances, how will this new CEO ensure that you get that ship back - and actually sorted so that you're not losing that kind of money.Kate Skinner, SOS: Support Public Broadcasting Coalition
Skinner also outlines that civil society has a massive role in the campaign to really save the SABC. Listen to the entire conversation with Azania Mosaka below:
