Cape Town introduces new draft by-law to protect its beaches

The City of Cape Town has introduced a new draft by-law intended to protect the coastline and help preserve South Africa's marine heritage, protecting it from pollution, poaching and the encroachment of private property.

The coastal by-law will be open for public comment on 1 August.

The city's mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt explains the purpose of the by-law.

One of the aspects of the by-law is to try and clamp down on people attempting to claim parts of the beach as their own private space.

The principle of the beach is that it belongs to all South Africans and it needs to be open.
