The state capture enquiry on Thursday continued to hear testimony related to the Gupta-linked Estina dairy project in Vrede in the Free State, with allegations of attacks orchestrated by former mineral resources minister Mosebenzi Zwane.
Former Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor of Phumelele Municipality, Doctor Radebe - who's also an emerging farmer - told the Zondo Commission he'd been assaulted for raising the alarm about dead cattle being dumped in a local river.
EWN reporter Barry Bateman says the allegations date back to 2014 when the first press reports were emerging about the Vrede dairy farm.
That's when there were piles of cattle carcasses dumped in a river in the area. This river happened to feed the Vrede Dam, which was ultimately used by the municipality to store its drinking water before it was purified and distributed to the community.— Barry Bateman, Reporter - EWN
According to Radebe, he was the one that alerted the media to the situation.
He said this angered people in the area and it wasn't long after that he was attacked.— Barry Bateman, Reporter - EWN
He's accused a group of people linked to the then-MEC of Agriculture, Mosebenzi Zwane... he said he has been assaulted and his life has been under threat.— Barry Bateman, Reporter - EWN
