Presidential Health Compact: DA not opposed to objectives, but 'it needs teeth'

Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday signed the Presidential Health Compact resulting from the 2018 Presidential Health Summit, aimed at "improving the quality of the South African healthcare system".

It was also signed by Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize and representatives of stakeholder groups to reflect a collaborative approach to ensure that the agreed interventions are implemented by all sectors of society, says the Presidency.

On Afternoon Drive, Melanie Rice speaks to the Democratic Alliance's health spokesperson, to find out what the official opposition thinks.

MP Siviwe Gwarube describes the Presidential Health Compact as a commendable document which contains necessary health system reforms, but says clarity is needed around its implementation, and also how it will be monitored.

We as the Democratic Alliance are not opposed to the objectives in there, but we're hoping to see that there's some implementation and also some funding behind, for the provinces to get on with the business

We are hoping now that the president has signed it, the minister will help give some effect and some teeth to it.

Gwarube says it's necessary to draw a distinction between the document signed today and the National Health Insurance bill, which has been approved by Cabinet.

The DA has serious concerns about the bill, including the fact that - given the country's history of state-owned enterprises - an enormous fund will be managed by the government.
