Thousands take to Joburg's street to celebrate 25 years of Democracy

People from all walks of life – families, friends, corporate teams and charities - braved the winter chill to walk the 5km, 8km, 15km and the special 25km routes.

City of Joburg Executive Mayor, Councilor Herman Mashaba, led the start of the 8km walk and as he fired the starting gun, members of the South African Police Service’s Air-wing staged a fly-past to the delight of walkers waiting to conquer the route.

The MTN Walk the Talk with 702 is proudly hosted by the City of Joburg, whose support and input into the event is invaluable in staging Africa’s largest mass participation event.

This year we created a special 25km route to celebrate 25 Years of Democracy.

Exclusive to this year’s event, a special 25km route took walkers on a journey through Joburg’s iconic landmarks, such as the Nelson Mandela Bridge, Constitution Hill, the Johannesburg Zoo, the Anglo Boer War Memorial and Zoo Lake.

The MTN Walk the Talk with 702 also celebrated South African icons with displays on the 5km and 8km routes at the bridge that crosses Barry Hertzog and on the 15km and 25km routes at Jorissen Place in Braamfontein.

The colourful displays honoured icons such as the late AIDS activist, Nkosi Johnson as “Youth Icon”; star athlete, Caster Semenya as “Sporting Icon”; the late singer, Brenda Fassie as “Arts & Culture Icon”; and Gift of the Givers’ Imtiaz Sooliman as “For Good Icon”. The MTN Walk the Talk has become an iconic event, as it connects thousands of South Africans from all walks of life. The spirit of unity that we experience at an event like this, reminds of what a wonderful country we live in.

Over 110 charity teams took part in the MTN Walk the Talk with 702 to raise funds and awareness for their causes while 570 corporate teams flew their company colours at the Walk.

The Walk is also continuing its unique community legacy project that gives back to the communities through which the various routes go. This year, the event is contributing towards a new ClearVu fence to secure the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.

The MTN Walk the Talk with 702 creates over 1,200 temporary jobs in the build-up to and on the day of the event.
