SA unemployment rate rises to 29%, the worst since 2008

South Africa's unemployment rate has increased by 1.4% in the second quarter of 2019 to 29%, the highest level since the first quarter of 2008, according to data released by Statistics South Africa.

Statistician-general Risenga Maluleka says the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Free State and North West generally experience high unemployment rate, with Lipopo retaining the lowest employment rate.

He tells Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala show that unemployment for young people is 54.4%. He says young people are forever vulnerable to the labour market.

We are talking about 6.7-million people that are unemployed in this 29%. We are talking about people who are actively looking for employment for four days a week and four weeks in a row.

We also have 2.7-million people who are your discouraged employment seekers. They are no longer looking for employment. They wake up every day and say: 'I am tired and discouraged.'

We have another 800,000 who didn't look for employment for various reasons.

The expanded definition is 10.2-million people but the official one is 6.7-million.
