Joburg city centre calm after vendors' clash with police on Thursday

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Kay Makhubela says the situation in the Joburg central business district (CBD) is calm and there is a high police presence.

This is after chaos erupted on Thursday when street vendors clashed with the police during a raid to seize counterfeit goods.

Social media videos show protesters running through the streets hurling stones at police vehicles.

Police retaliated by firing rubber bullets.

Makhubela gives Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show an update.

We will continue to do raids where necessary, however as we speak now there is nothing happening. For now, we have retreated tactically so that when we do go back we go there and raid where we are supposed to.
