Hendrik Verwoerd is the face of Amnesty International #SignTheSmileOff campaign. The Human Rights organisation is asking you to wipe the smile off Verwoerd's face and tackle the current state of basic education.

The human rights organisation is using Hendrik Verwoerd, the minister of native affairs during apartheid, as the face of their #SignTheSmileOff campaign to tackle the state of basic education - under the assertion that Verwoerd would be smiling at the current state of education system some 25 years after democracy.

Amnesty International's Executive Director, Shenilla Mohamed chats to Kieno Kammies about the aim of the campaign.

We really want South Africans to sit up and take note of the fact that our children are really totally being let down by the present government.

Shenilla Mohamed, Executive director - Amnesty International

She says they have spent a year researching the state of education on the ground and the results are appalling.

The campaign has met some backlash from the Education Department but she says they are not saying these things to create problems.

We are saying these things to let South Africans know that their children are in a state of crisis.

Shenilla Mohamed, Executive director - Amnesty International
