Dog poisoning on the increase, says animal welfare organisation

The Community Led Animal Welfare says the number of dogs being poisoned in South Africa is certainly on the rise.

News24 recently reported that as many as 1,000 dogs are poisoned in the country every week.

Community Led Animal Welfare director Cora Bailey says part of the problem is that the substance used is readily available.

We see them in our clinic daily and this has been ongoing for many years and the numbers are certainly increasing.

The poison is commonly known as 'two step'.... anybody can buy it, it is freely available, it is not policed at all although it is a banned substance.

People are being killed from this, not just animals. It is absolutely lethal and it should be off our streets.

Bailey has warned pet owners to avoid having their dogs sleep outside at night.

If your dogs have access to the front gate, they can be very easily poisoned, so keeping your pets away from the front of the house is one thing. Keeping them indoors at night, you will be safer, your pets will be much safer.

The other thing is of course to keep the number of your vet handy or all-night emergency clinic. You cannot save the dog yourself.
