'Power corrupts and that is what we have seen happen at the SABC'

Broadcasting law expert Justine Limpitlaw says when one looks at the detail of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) commission of inquiry report, it is clear that the approach of the African National Congress towards the public broadcaster was factionallised.

Limpitlaw was responding to the report released on Monday by veteran journalist Joe Thloloe, which looked into alleged editorial interference at the SABC.

The inquiry made damning findings against senior officials and high ranking politicians, detailing how the newsroom’s editorial policy was influenced by individuals who had no authority to do so.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to the broadcasting law expert on the matter.

While it is quite clear what can only be described as the Zuma aligned faction was in charge at the SABC, other forces within the ANC were putting out press statements at the time saying they didn't agree with Hlaudi Motsoeneng. I think the interference was more nuanced than directly by the ANC.

Limpitlaw says according to the report, former communications minister Faith Mutambi was named as one of the people who would threaten to fire staff.

Power corrupts and that is what we have seen happen at the SABC. The broadcaster is such a powerful information tool because it reaches all sorts of demographics in South Africa.
